But the thing is, it's kinda not one. Released on the NES in 1988, Mario 2 was originally conceptualized as, you guessed it, a sequel to Super Mario Bros before it got shelved and converted into a Yume Kojo product placement game. So when Nintendo needed an easier Mario sequel for western audiences it just made sense to use the forgotten Japanese exclusive platformer that was initially designed as a Mario game in the first place. So there you have it. Doki Doki Panic was a reskin of a Mario prototype. And Mario 2 was a reskin of that. So it is still a reskin I'm just being obnoxious about it.
